DIY: Cookie Jar (~$10)

HI! Quick update.

I usually don't include videos in my blog posts, but there's really no point of me taking snaps of this DIY project when a short video to watch would be much better!

Yes! It's my very own video. I do have a YouTube channel if you did not know.

I'm still much more of a blogger than vlogger, but if you prefer beauty vlogs, then here is my channel. I do monthly launch videos too, and some rambles and vlogs.

Anyhows, the cookie jar costed me less than $10 to make and is fairly quick to do.

  • Jar, $3 (The Reject Shop)
  • Cookies, $3~4 (Woolworths)
  • Ribbon, $2 (The Reject Shop)
  • Gift Tag, FREE!

Something different, but I hope you like it!

DIY Nail Rack -- where to purchase tools & materials in Australia?

If you follow me on Instagram and Twitter, you would probably know that I've successfully made a DIY nail rack a few weeks ago, after spending ages to figure out how to store my nail polishes!

Being a happy chap, I wanted to share with you guys on how I made it, how long it look and where I purchased the tools and materials (in Sydney, Australia)!

I actually didn't follow any particular DIY Nail Racks guides on YouTube, to be honest. I had a quick look at this video and it's pretty much just common sense!

Of course, I measured the spaces in between each row to suit the different heights of my nail polishes and I just left the top row open instead, so I can hold taller nail polishes.

Materials & Tools (in Sydney, Australia)

  1. Metal Ruler -- check Bunnings Warehouse, Big W or borrow from a neighbour or relative (anyone who does construction, timber-work should have one of these!). I didn't use one, but I'd suggest it as it's sturdier, more exact in measuring units and sharp utility knives can't cut into it (like it did to my regular wooden ruler).
  2. Foam boards (also known as foamcores, I believe) -- can be found at your local arts&crafts stores (such as Riots Art & Craft). Available in different sizes and thickness. I purchased 3 pieces for my nail rack at ArtMax (Liverpool, Sydney) for $7/piece.
  3. Hot Gluestick Melts -- $5 for a pack of 24 at Big W.
  4. Hot Glue Gun -- Big W's craft section. $10 - $15. Borrow from someone if you can!
  5. Utility Knife -- sharp as hell, so do be careful with it! Very easy to find. You can check Bunnings Warehouse, Big W, Asian bargain stores, etc........... or just borrow again.

The only items I purchased were the foamboards, hot glue gun and hot gluesticks, totalling to $35-$40 (which is okay). The hot glue gun and gluestick melts are with me to stay, and I still have a very large piece of foamboard left! Will make another nail polish rack... :P

Question time! Here are a few things many people question:
Q. Is hot glue strong enough?
A. I know hot glue doesn't look that promising, but it is super strong for crafty projects! I actually didn't think it'd turn out very sturdy either, but I was wrong! :P
Q. How many nail polishes can it hold?
A. This depends on the size of your nail polishes and how wide your nail rack is! Mine can hold up to 14 OPI nail polishes and I have 8 rows so that's at least 112 nail polishes!
Q. How long did it take you?
This nail rack took me about 4-5 hours to make because I'm a very keen bean -- I can't leave things unfinished >:[

Of course if you have any questions, leave me a comment below! ^_^ I'd be more than happy to help/answer!

This DIY project was super easy to do. It just took a long time because I had to be very exact on the measurements so the nail rack didn't look sloppy.. but it's totally worth it!

Week in Photos: Priceline Pout Day, Beauty Editor's Workshop, Sister's Formal, Moon Festival, DIY

Hellooooooooooooooooooooo!

I haven't updated about myself in yonks! Mainly because my life [everyday] is just so exciting (not at all) that  I don't have anything to really blog about... LOL. But!

This past week has been super exciting and fun for me so I just really want to share with you! Here's photos and short captions to show you!

Wednesday 19th September -- I was kindly invited to Nutrimetics Colour Wardrobe event! I only get invited to beauty events [probably] 4 times a year so I was super excited for this! Even skipped TAFE for it..

The event was fun and helpful where we learnt about our undertones and discussed which colours suited our complexion more -- in terms of fashion and make-up!

Later in the day, got back in the area from Sydney CBD and had me some Meet Fresh (dessert) at Cabramatta! First time trying it and it was alright! Had a great catch-up session with Alice form Arsyparsy!

Thursday 20th September -- Skipped TAFE again for Priceline's Pout Day at Martin Pl (Sydney) for 30 Days of Fashion & Beauty. I wasn't able to attend any events earlier so I HAD to skip TAFE for this!

Went with Tezza @ Myteeefine.com Had a mini make-up tutorial session (10 minutes) whilst participating in the Guinness World Record attempt and we made it baby! World's largest make-up class of 261 participants! Yeap. You heard me!

Also met Amy @ Beauty In A Bottle!

Also walked the pink carpet at the event. Yeap! Hittin' the red carpets in no time guys!! ^_^

After the event, I quickly left to get back in time to do my sister's and her friend's make-up for formal! Have a look at her awesome hair do for prom/formal!

Braids and flowers! Pretty amazing for $55 (at Elegant Beauty in Cabramatta)

I did make-up for the girl on the left and my sister (on the left!). What do you think guys? ^_^

Friday 21st September -- Priceline's Beauty Editior's Workshop!

Attended this event with Tezza too! It was located at Martin Pl, in a bright pink portable building! Really impossible to miss!

Got our hair done! Pretty curls!!!

Sunday 23rd September -- Moon Festival (Tet Trung Thu) at Cabramatta! I actually only went for the yummy spicy fishballs! The same stall also had deep fried squids and holy cow, they were nice!

Monday 24th September -- DIY!

YEAP GUYS! I've been SO desperate for a new nail storage/organiser. I hate seeing my nail polishes stored in boxes. I FINALLY found all the correct materials to put this DIY nail polish rack and shelf together!

A quick google will get you to many DIY videos and posts. I will update soon for any readers who are around my area (Liverpool, Sydney), on where to purchase the materials! :')

Hehehehe! That's all! I'll be back with beauty posts soon guys --- Hope everyone has been well! Let me know what's been happening for you also!

How To: DIY Lipstick Palette

Compressing your lipsticks into your DIY lip palette is a great way to save more space in the make-up stash, don't ya think?

You can choose whichever lipsticks you want to melt, but for me... NYX Round Lipsticks are my picks! I generally don't like them (review here), so I know I won't ever carry them around in my handbag or whatever. Instead of leaving them around in my make-up stash.. I figured that pressing them into one palette will save much more space.

What you'll need:
  • An empty palette (I bought mine on eBay for $3)
  • Two metal spoons
  • A toaster or a candle
  • Anti-bacterial tablets (I use Milton tablets which can be purchased at Priceline)
  • Your preferred lipsticks!
  • Glue (I used craft glue)

Procedure:

1. Sanitise your spoons and aluminium pans by soaking them in [enough] water with half of your anti-bacterial tablet.

2. If still a full-product lipstick, cut the lipstick in half and place on the metal spoon. My NYX lipsticks fill two aluminium pans.

3. Place the metal spoon over the toaster to melt the lipstick.

4. Make sure that you place the aluminium pan on a straight and flat surface so that the lipstick will cool with a flat level. Pour the melted lipstick into the pan and leave to cool.

5. While waiting for cool, peel off the label of your lipstick and stick onto the inside cover of the palette.

6. After the pan of lip colour has cooled down, using craft glue, glue the pan to the palette and you're done!

Ta-da!

Now you more space in your stash to be filled up with newer make-up!

Hope you enjoyed the post and found it helpful!

DIY Powder Puff

Powder puff isn't a beauty tool I love most (or include in my foundation routine), however for some people, it's a different case.
Like a powder brush, it is used to apply powder [foundation] products such as loose powder and press powder.

Now... You're probably thinking.... "Why do I need to know how to DIY powder puffs?".

Because, some people [like me] enjoy applying make-up on others OR for any make-up artists who are sitll learning or doing voluntary work,
you don't always have enough money to fork out for powder puffs. So therefore, make yourself some!

They'll be reusable, affordable and on-the-go!

Let's start...

All you'd need is:
- Cotton wool OR cotton pads
- Tissue

Simple as that.

Steps are demonstrated in the pics below:

Place the cotton pads/wool onto piece of tissue like this.

Take corners and edges of the tissue to one point like above and twist end like so, so you can hold it easier!

Dab this into powder and simply use it as a powder puff!

Easy right? Hope you find that helpful my deerest deers! :)

Food masks DIY

As I promised most of you on my Twitter that I'd hurry up and do a post about different food ingredients which will help to benefit your skin when added to facial masks.

All credits to my two wonderful teachers who has given me the handouts!

So, I've actually tried this in class and my skin feels amazing after a cleansing routine, but it feels specially soft and even more amazing after the food mask!

Each mask targets different skin types and the mask my operator got for me consist of oatsmeal, yogurt, honey and egg yolk! After taking the mask off, my skin was SO soft and smooth.

You just mix all of these up in one bowl and then apply it to your face and leave for 20minutes before rinsing off. Depending no what you mix, it will have a different scent! Mine smelt so yummy though, I would've ate it hahaha!

Let's start!

*******PLEASE READ********

Directions: Combine a tablespoon of any one of these ingredients with a base mask, binder and essential oils.
- Binders are used to create the correct consistency so it doesn't smear around your hair and onto your hair or clothes.
- For pulped ingredients, blend enough raw ingredients to make a tablespoon of pulp. So if you wanted apple pulp, you'll slice apples up and blend it! If you don't want to blend, you can alternatively cook and then mash the slices of apples.

So here's the list for which ingredients are suitable for you:
  • Apple pulp: slightly acidic; soothes and gently exfoliates
  • Asparagus pulp: stimulating; dries up pimples
  • Brewer's yeast: excellent for oily skin
  • Carrot pulp: antiseptic; heals pimples
  • Celery juice: acts as a toner for tired or older skin
  • Cooked and mashed turnip: deep-cleansing
  • Egg white: astringent and drying for oily skins
  • Egg yolk: nourishes dry skin
  • Fresh fig pulp: an emollient and cleanses
  • Grated cucumber: cools, soothes and heals. Works as a mild bleach for sallow skin and freckles
  • Grated raw potato: helps clears blemishes and eczema
  • Honey: hydrates, softens, soothes and heals
  • Lemon juice (diluted in one part of water/one part of lemon juice): removes oil and gently bleaches freckles
  • Lettuce juice (blend lettuce leaves to a pulp, adding little water): soothes sore, rough skin; helps heal pimples
  • Mashed apricots: moisturizes, soothes and cleanses
  • Mashed avocado: deeply penetrating and nourishing
  • Mashed banana: nourishing
  • Mashed strawberries: slightly acidic and luxurious; cleanses
  • Mashed tomatoes: excellent for oily skin
  • Natural yoghurt (DO NOT USE FLAVOURED YOGHURT!): moisturizes and restores skin's acid balance
  • Orange juice: hydrating for older skin
  • Pear pulp: soothes and cools hot, sunburnt skin
  • Pineapple pulp: an astringent wash for oily skin
  • Watermelon juice: gently exfoliates, softens and deep-cleanses.

And here are your binders:
  • Finely grounded rolled oats (oatsmeal) <--- recommended
  • Dried milk powder
  • Kaolin (fine clay) powder (from pharmacies)
  • Wholemeal plain flour
  • Finely ground almonds

When do you apply masks? Here's the routine and make sure you don't use hot water:
  • Remove makeup (if needed)
  • Cleanser
  • Exfoliater (if needed)
  • Facial Mask
  • Toner
  • Moisturizer

So you apply the mask after exfoliating your skin if you wish to do so, or else jump straight to masks after cleansing. After facial mask, make sure to tone your skin and follow with your day/night moisturizer.

You definitely could mix anything together to suit your skin. This is a DIY mask! You must try this out!

If you do try these out, this is probably best to use 2-3 times a week! I still have recipe of masks targeted for different skin types, but I'll post that up later in a few days!

Meanwhile, try these DIY food masks!

Remember NOT to use flavoured yoghurt and I really recommend oatsmeal and yoghurt for everyone's masks' base! Also, remember to dilute your lemon juice before applying to face, it can sting badly for drier skin types and sensitive skin too!

Yours deerest,
