Storing make-up in the fridge?

Hey beautifools! Waddup.

I instagramed a photo today on "storing all my lipsticks, cream blushers and lotions in the fridge" and a friend asked, "Make-up in the fridge?!!?".

I'm sure many of you guys are aware that most skincare products should be stored in a cool place under 30 degrees.. so why not the fridge?!

Skincare products -- I love storing my face masks and moisturisers in the fridge so it'll feel fresh and cool when applied in the morning! Not to mention that it also keeps the consistency of my cream moisturisers nicely thick.. I've also heard that cool-temp'ed eye creams can reduce swelling and puffiness.

Right so that's for skincare products, but no one ever said that make-up can't be stored in a cool place? So in it goes too!

Lipsticks -- are cream based, so it is 100% possible for them to melt in hot and humid temperatures. Keeping them in the fridge will keep them cool and solid.

Cream blushers -- are cream based, so they're also prone to melting also.

Cream foundations or face products of thicker consistencies -- Like my Palmer's BB Cream. I whipped it out today and the consistency changed to be much more liquid-y... so in the fridge it goes!

Eyeliners/lip liners -- Leaving eyelining and lip lining pencils in the hot and humid can surely cause them to melt to a soft texture.. so leave them in the fridge for a 3-5 minutes prior to sharpening/using!

Now.. to the downfalls.. be careful that all your products are sealed unless you want lipsticks with a specialized durian (or fish or whatever you have in your fridge) scent! Oh god...

Anyways, that's all from me for now... but now it's your turn to share!

Do YOU store your make-up in the fridge? Would you?
Why/why not?

Colour Me In: White -- A guide to basic highlighting

'Colour Me In' is a series of posts in collaboration with Alice of ArsyParsy, Tezza of Myteeefine and Amanda of Thai-Tales!

*****

Hoooray! It's Thursday again! We're one day away from the weekends, hang on tight everybody!
This week's focus colour is 'white' and with no doubt, the first make-up product I turned to were highlighters -- my ultimate favourite cosmetic product of all time!

Highlighters are light reflecting, no coverage cosmetic products which helps to accentuate the planes of our face and can also help to 'fake' that healthy, radiant glow! Strictly not to be confused with illuminators

Highlighters can be, and are usually more 'intense' with its light reflecting properties and should only be applied over the high planes of the face.
Illuminators, on the other hand, are more subtle and luminious in finish and can be used to mix with coverage products such as foundations or tinted moisturisers for an all over dewy glow. Illuminators can definitely double up as a 'subtle highlighter', but never vice versa.

So how do we highlight?

1. Know your skin's undertone and pick a tone!
Just like foundations, highlighters are also available in a variety of undertones (such as pearly whites, golds and pinks) to cater to our individual preferences and complexions.
Whites = generally suited to both complexions
Golds = suited to warmer skin tones
Pinks = suited to cooler skin tones

2. Know your occasion and pick a finish!
If you're looking forward to a big event, you should definitely take into consideration whether flash photography will be involved or not.
Pearl finishes = ideal for day events with the intense and shimmery glow it offers. For evening events which usually does involve flash photography, pearl finishes do have the potential to fake an oily glow, rather than a radiant glow (and you don't want that!).
Matte/satin finishes = more subtle and are more about creating dimensions of the facial planes. Such subtle finishes are generally suited for both day and evening events. Matte/satin finishes are quite hard to find, but can be substituted by a foundation 1-2 shades lighter than the skintone.

3. The basic highlighting guide with each finish.

Highlighters with pearly finishes are pretty intense, so I would suggest to only highlight on the highest planes of the face such as the cheekbones, brow bones, nose bridge (lightly) and cupid's bow.

Skip the chin, skip the 'triangle' highlighting method and skip the forehead with pearly finishes or you'll look overly pearly and shimmery!

As for matte/satin finishes which are much more subtle.. just go crazy with it! Highlight the centre of the forehead, brow bones, nose bridge, cupid's bow, chin and cheekbones.

For the cheekbones, you can go ahead with the triangle highlighting method (what Kim Kardashian does) for a more chiselled and sculpted look. This method will also brighten up your complexion and eye area, but make sure you conceal your dark circles well or it'll put emphasis on your dark circles instead!

4. A few affordable highlighting/illuminating products you may want to know about!

1. L'Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Concealer (works better as highlighter than concealer, satin finish) $26.95
2. Face Of Australia Mineral Therapy Illuminating Pearls (highlighter, slight pearly sheen) $14.95
3. Face Of Australia Mineral Therapy Liquid Illuminators (illuminator) $14.95
4. L'Oreal Paris Lumi Light Concentrated Primer (primer, but better as highlighter, light pearly sheen) $29.95

The only product from the list that I haven't tried yet is the Face Of Australia Liquid Illuminator, but I've heard so much good stuff about it so I thought I'd share that with you! :)

Your turn to share!

What is your favourite, go-to highlighting product?
Is it the well-loved Benefit High Beam? The YSL Touche Eclat Pen Highlighter?

Colour Me In: Blue Eyeliners -- What? Who? Where? How?

'Colour Me In' is a series of posts in collaboration with Alice of ArsyParsy, Tezza of Myteeefine and Amanda of Thai-Tales!

*****

Hey there my lovelies! So sorry about last week's post being postponed! We were all so busy that we couldn't catch up with last week's post. But that's okay! We're back now!

This week's colour is 'blue' and I've chosen blue eyeliners to do! Don't freak out though -- blue eyeliners are actually not as scary as you think they are, and are nothing like the hard-to-pull-off blue eyeshadows!

Let's talk what, who, where, how and why!

WHAT are blue eyeliners?
Well, blue eyeliners are blue eyeliners........... LOL very nice Tram, very nice! But don't forget that blue eyeliners comes in different tones and finishes too! Most make-up users associate blue eyeliners with brights and bolds but hey! Let it be sky blue, pure blue, cyan or navy.. they're still blue eyeliners, so don't you forget!

WHO can sport blue eyeliners?
Doesn't matter what eye color(s) you have, blue eyeliners are for everyone to sport... at their own flattering shades and tones. It really does take much time for you to figure out which shades you prefer the most.

But in general, ladies with brown, hazel, and green eyes should have no problem with blue eyeliners. As for blue eyes, I would suggest going for bronze shades rather than blue. Problems with blue on blue eyes are:
  • It may take over your eye colour rather than making it 'pop'
  • Depending on how you wear the eyeliner, it may look awkwardly and overdoing-ly blue

But of course, you can still experiment with blue eyeliners! Just make sure that if you like to make your eyes pop, then always opt for a blue shade lighter than your eye colour.

My eyes are naturally brown and my favourite to use are navy eyeliners -- really makes my eye colour pop! It took me a while to find the 'right shade', but since then.... the brand no longer makes that same shade! T_T

WHERE to find blue eyeliners?
You can find blue eyeliners from most lower-end brands here in Aussie! I actually own two blue eyeliners and they are from Australis and Prestige.

Australis (left), Prestige (right)

Australis Stay Put Long Lasting Eyeliner in Atlantic -- is a very bright blue which lasts quite long, but unfortunately doesn't have that 'soft' formula as I can really feel it when it glides on. No longer matters though as this is from yonks ago and is now discontinued! They have a newer blue shade called 'Bluebird'.

Prestige Waterproof Eyeliner in Surf -- is a darker royal blue shade. I haven't used this too much, but the formula is okay. It glides on well, is fairly pigmented, but creases too much on me. Not very sure if it's 100% waterproof..

HOW to wear blue eyeliners?
How to wear eyeliners! Yay! Fun [camwhoring] part! There are many fun and flattering ways you can wear blue eyeliners... Leggo!

Firstly! You can wear darker blue eyeliners smudged and smoked out on the bottom lash line! It's a softer look which still incorporates the blue hue! I've used the Prestige Waterproof Eyeliner in Surf here..

Or, you can go wild! Make your eyes pop with a bright blue liner! I do think it's very cute and quirky, which is totally appropriate fro the Spring and Summer to come! Of course, this is with the help of Australis' Stay Put Eyeliner in Atlantic...

Or you can also do double liners, which I would definitely sport any day! It's a fun way to use coloured eyeliners -- simple and fun but less 'out there' (for me anyways as my crease is very teeny!).

Yeap -- so that's that! I hope you've enjoyed this week's post! Let me know...

Would you/do you wear blue eyeliners?

Which is your favourite look?

Thanks for reading everyone! I'll keep you posted on more reviews and all soon!

DIY Peel Off Base Coat for Nail Polishes

Not too long ago, I stumbled across an Instagram photo by @musicalhouses featuring a tip for DIY peel off base glue which is very much of a dupe for the latest beauty hit, Essence's Peel Off Base Coat from their 'Ready for Boarding' collection. Have you heard?

I've seen a few bloggers featured reviews of Essence's Peel Off Base Coat and I thought that it was such a wonderful product... only to learn that it's very easy to recreate at home by PVA glue.

It won't work with glue sticks -- just PVA glue! Any brand of PVA glue!

So as I was at Woolies just the other night, I thought I'd pick up a bottle of Elmer's School Glue which costed a mere $2.50. Cheapo!

And then applied it all over my nails... with very thick coats!

Wrong wrong wrong! Thin coats are more than enough of what you'd want as it dries faster and works about the same! So please make sure to apply just thin coats!

The PVA glue ended up drying out clear which was awesome! You should make sure that you have a smooth and even layer of PVA glue as base coat to work with since it does very much effect the smoothness of the finish look. Just look at my middle nail... T_T

After that, just apply your nail polishes like the norms and wait for it to dry!

Then when you're sick or wanting to change nail colours, just simply peel off the base coat and along will come the rest of the nail.............. polish!

So that's as easy as ABC, right?

It's a fabulous base coat idea for those stubborn hard-to-remove glitter nail polishes and marble nails and I truly thank the blogger/person who thought of this idea!

Ok.. this was a short post, but I do urge you to read Musical Houses' informative post on this as she does speak about the health concerns, detailed dupe comparison and concerned questions about its lasting power as the glue itself IS 'washable'!

Very informative! You should give it a click!

Have you heard of this idea? Would you try it?

I'm actually on work placement at the moment, so I cannot wear nail polishes whilst working with children. Therefore I cannot try and absolutely have no idea how well this DIY base coat would last.. If you have tried, please share with us in the comments how long the base coat lasted!

Make-Up Don't: Have too many colours!

Hey there beautifools!! ^_^

I've been longing to share with you some tip posts and I've finally got to it. Hehehe... I've been quite lazy lately. All day playing the Sims 3, but that's ok! My sim is gonna become an A-List celebrity soon! Yay!!

I'm so silly!

Anyhows.. without further ado, let's quickly get to one of the most important thing that we should all bare in mind when it comes to applying make-up!

Playing and changing up the usual make-up look and routine is fine, but try to keep all features in the same colour suit! Obviously, if you're wearing a red lipstick, you don't have to go monochromatic and do red eyes (yikes!) and red cheeks, but you can always try to find other shades which compliments the bold red lip. It'd be a start to avoid this:

Smoky navy blue eyes, apricot cheeks and a bright fuchsia lipstick? I don't think so!

Too many different contrasting colours on the face can make you look quite funky and instead of being flattering, it can really make you clownish and unnatural!

I guess some people do get away with it, depending how well blended the features are, but so many don't! Anyways, whether you do get away with it or not, let's just avoid it altogether!

Tell me! Have you ever been a victim of clownish and mismatching make-up?!
(I promise I won't giggle!)

For me, I know I certainly have -- definitely during my younger years! At the time, a blush was a blush and nothing more! Of course, I didn't care and know about colours and didn't know the best thing to do was to match it up with lips! Yikes!

How to: Apply Liquid Foundation with a Make-Up Spritz

Holy cow, it's been cold here in Sydney, Australia!
It's just approaching the beginning of Winter and it's already this cold!

You know what that means?

Disastrous weather and season for drier skin types!

Seriously, my cheeks have been disastrously dry ever since the weather has got colder and colder. Eventually, that means not only my skincare routine needs to be considered, but also my make-up routine!

So as I sat down to get ready for TAFE one day, I looked at my Australis Make-Up Spritz and thought.. What if I....

Dot ma favourite Face Of Australia Lasting Looks Natural Foundation on...

Spray the make-up finishing spray on me Sigma F80 Buffer Brush..

..and then quickly buff in the foundation?

So that's what I did and I couldn't be ANY happier with the results!!

Face Of Australia Lasting Looks Natural Foundation is a lovely foundation and in its nature, it already has a dewy finish. Perfect for most skin types, but I find that it dries a tad too fast and can sometimes put emphasis on my drier patches.

This method certainly gave the foundation's blend-ability a boost, helped it to glide on better, gave me more time to work with it before it settled and left the foundation lookin' a tad more dewier than usual and oh-soo natural!

(Here's me me me me... with perfect lighting!)

Yeap. I'm obsessed with the natural dewy and glowy complexion. If you are too, then definitely try out this method if you have a make-up spritz layin' around in your make-up stash!

Tell me what you think! Will you be trying this method, or nay?

P.S. You can use any make-up spritz by the way!

How To: DIY Lipstick Palette

Compressing your lipsticks into your DIY lip palette is a great way to save more space in the make-up stash, don't ya think?

You can choose whichever lipsticks you want to melt, but for me... NYX Round Lipsticks are my picks! I generally don't like them (review here), so I know I won't ever carry them around in my handbag or whatever. Instead of leaving them around in my make-up stash.. I figured that pressing them into one palette will save much more space.

What you'll need:
  • An empty palette (I bought mine on eBay for $3)
  • Two metal spoons
  • A toaster or a candle
  • Anti-bacterial tablets (I use Milton tablets which can be purchased at Priceline)
  • Your preferred lipsticks!
  • Glue (I used craft glue)

Procedure:

1. Sanitise your spoons and aluminium pans by soaking them in [enough] water with half of your anti-bacterial tablet.

2. If still a full-product lipstick, cut the lipstick in half and place on the metal spoon. My NYX lipsticks fill two aluminium pans.

3. Place the metal spoon over the toaster to melt the lipstick.

4. Make sure that you place the aluminium pan on a straight and flat surface so that the lipstick will cool with a flat level. Pour the melted lipstick into the pan and leave to cool.

5. While waiting for cool, peel off the label of your lipstick and stick onto the inside cover of the palette.

6. After the pan of lip colour has cooled down, using craft glue, glue the pan to the palette and you're done!

Ta-da!

Now you more space in your stash to be filled up with newer make-up!

Hope you enjoyed the post and found it helpful!

Newbies' guide to formal make-up

I'm unsure when is it 'prom-season' in other countries, but formal here in Australia would be coming up in a few months, so therefore... you need to start considering your make-up for prom!

Why? Because it's not something you could pick out just a few days before the big night. You need trials to see what works and what doesn't and not to mention that your skin conditions might change unexpectedly. Who knows?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

PREPPING AND PRIMING

#1 Know your skin

To look flawless on the night, you'll need to be prepping and priming your skin first! You SHOULD be taking care of your skin already, and if NOT, start taking care of your skin NOW! I recommend at least two-three months before the big night because to improve your complexion means less to stress about! You can read about my suitable skincare products for your skin here.

#2 Moisturize your lips
Start moisturizing your lips at least 2 weeks before your big night. Whether your lips are dry or not, prevention is the key. Any lip balm would do, but if your lip is disastrous... I recommend Blistex Lip Conditioner which you can purchase at your local pharmacy.

-----------------------------------------------------------

FACE PRODUCTS

Now.. onto the cosmetics and please note that the products recommended below may OR may not work for you.

# Primers helps whatever you slap onto your face stays on for longer and the application easier, I recommend primer for all skin types/conditions. Budget-friendly primers can be found by Face Of Australia and Australis.
# Correctors are essential if you have really dark shadows [usually around your eyes] and/or acne and/or red acne scars. Green concealers are used for correcting redness which most of the time includes acne and acne scars. Pink concealers are used to correct purple tinges on the face which includes bruises and/or dark purple under-eye circles. Maybelline has some Cover Sticks which are very affordable.

# Foundation is a hard one and is a MUST. You can read about basic foundation guidelines here, but I DO recommend Revlon ColorStay Liquid Foundation ($17-$37) as they have two lines targeted for both dry skin and oily skin and stick to your skin like no tomorrow [but smells disastrous]. It is a tad pricey, but you cannot go wrong with it. The only thing you can go wrong with when choosing a foundation is the shade.

# Concealer is definitely also a must if your imperfections are STILL shining through even after correcting. I'm unaware of any cream concealers from lower-end brands which are reliable, but in general, you should opt for stick concealers and/or cream concealers for heavy coverage.

# Powder-ing is necessary and the product should be with you at ALL times (even during the formal event). Whether you have oily skin or not, it's still recommended as it makes your make-up last longer and prevents shine in your photos which will last forever. I recommend transluscent because it doesn't cake your skin and some translucent powder such as Australis Ready. Set. Go Finishing ($12.95) powder even tops it off with a flawless photogenic finish! However, it CAN be a tad messy to bring along so you can always opt for Revlon's PhotoReady Translucent ($34.95) powder which is quite pricey but neat.

# Blushers are used to add colour to the face. However, you can just use any eyeshadows of your shade and finish preference as a blusher, if you already have.

# Bronzers and highlighters, I don't think are essential. It's something you can skip because contouring and highligting the face is only used to perfect it to an oval shape and fake facial planes. You ARE trying to look like you.. not somebody else. However, like blushers, you can also replace bronzers it with any warm-toned brown eyeshadows [with a blue base, rather than pink] and highlight using a shade lighter foundation OR a lighter-than-your-skintone eyeshadow.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

EYE PRODUCTS

# Eyeshadows you plan to use needs to be pigmented, have a long lasting power or can be combined with an eyeshadow primer. I don't use eyeshadows so I wouldn't know what to recommend. You're better off with searching around at BeautyHeaven, and make sure you know how to use the eyeshadows of course!

# Eyeshadow bases/primers are also something I never used. However, I do know that Face of Australia ($7.95) and Australis ($12.95) has eye primers/bases in their range, but if you simply can't afford an extra $7~13, try some concealer as a base for your eyeshadows to stick!

# Eyeliner is a MUST, whether you have big or small eyes. The great thing about eyeliners are the forms they come in: pencils; liquid; gel; and cake. If you're looking for clean and precised lines, you're better off with liquid and gel, BUT they DO take alot of practise to master. Pencils are great for smokey looks because you can multi-use them as an eyeshadow also when they are smudged (perfect for smokey looks)! I haven't came across lotsa great eyeliners, but I DO NOT recommend pencil eyeliners from Australis and Nude By Nature. Ones I love are from an Asian brand called Le'lan Vital.. I love their PerfectWear Eyeliner and ExtremeWear Gel eyeliner. P.S. Make sure your eye products are waterproof!

# Mascaras needs to be waterproof and they are rated by personal preferences. Everyones' lashes are different and different mascaras impact differently... I personally LOVE Rimmel Glam'Eyes for allowing me to adjust volume and length in my lashes!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

LIP PRODUCTS

If you could only pick up two items from the following, I would pick a lip-liner of my preferred shade and top it off with a lip gloss since lip-liners are very long-wearing [but can be drying too].

# Lip liners are okay. Unless you're planning to wear a red or dark colour lipstick or a colour which is contrasting to your skin, then you can possibly skip the lip liners. However, that'll call for applying lipstick frequently during the event as taking away long-lasting power. I don't use lip liners also, so I'm not sure!

# Lipsticks are recommended but you can skip it! They come in different textures and a variety of different finishes. It's a personal preference, but for those who loves creamy textures.. I recommend Australis Colour Inject Mineral Lipsticks [for their fantastic formula] and Maybelline's ColourSensational Lipsticks [for their fabulous shade collections].

# Lipglosses, like lipsticks are up to you. In fact, all these lip products are up to you but it's recommended as it'll complete your look! I recommend Australis Colour Inject Mineral Lipglosses ($11.95), you can read my review here >

---------------------------------------------------------------------

BRUSHES

# Brushes are also a matter of personal preferences, but speaking of quality.. I definitely can tell you which brands to stay away from! One brand I dislike is BYS! The bristles of their brushes are very pokey and the brush itself is so cheap! I have tried their Blusher brush and Foundation brush which didn't favour me. However, their eyeshadow brush is OK.

Comparing BYS to GLOSS brushes, GLOSS brushes wins by far as their brushes are more dense and great quality for the price! I love their Foundation and Powder brushes, however I'd stay away from their synthetic Angular brush as it's rubbish.

Ecotools also have great organic brushes which are great quality also!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

REVISION

Just a recap of what's definitely a must:
  • Foundation
  • Concealer
  • Powder
  • Blusher
  • Eyeliner
  • Mascara
  • Eyeshadows (if you know how to use it!)

That's all! I hope you lovelies enjoy this post and of course, apply this for any other formal occasions and just not for proms!

Back2Basic: Foundations

As I stated, different textures of cleansers are more suitable for different skin types and conditions, this also applies to foundations.

Many of you ladies probably came across make-up artists, gurus and/or beauty bloggers stating that our face is like a canvas, in artistry. If you're like me with fewer skin conditions causing the skin to not be of a very smooth appearance, foundation is a MUST. It enhances the skin's appearance, cover up imperfections, even out your skin tone and provide a base for your make-up routine.

Foundations

You'll always apply foundation over your moisturizer. If you have normal-dry skin, it's better to wait until your moisturizer is completely absorbed into the skin and if you have normal-oily skin, you're better off with an oil-free or an oil-absorbing moisturizer.

Foundations are available in many different formulations:
  • Oil-based (suitable for dry skin)
  • Cream-based (suitable for dry skin)
  • Liquid (all skin types)
  • Compact
  • Cake (medium-heavy coverage, extra powder, suitable for normal-oily skin)
  • Primer/base -- colourless

Each product offers a different finish, such as:
  • Matte gives a shine-free finish with a powdery appearance. It can look like a mask if applied too heavily. Mature skin should avoid to achieve a very-matte finish as it could accentuate wrinkles! With a matte finish, it's preferred that you should add some colour to your eyes and lips.
  • Semi-matte is the MOST wearable finish and allows our skin to have a dewy, healthy sheen. It's quite suitable for every day wear.
  • Sheer/tinted foundations gives a light and natural finish. It's most suitable for almost-flawless skin.

So I hope that helps you and I know it's a 'duh' post, but some foundation beginners don't know this! So excuse me :P

My room is SO messy at the moment! I might clean it up and do a room tour post LOL... honestly...

Hope you find this post helpful!

MAC Studio Fix Fluid & Revlon Colorstay Foundation Color Chart

For all requests on helping you choose a suitable shade: I've found this chart from around the web, so I really have no idea and won't be able to help you pick out a shade from Revlon or MAC. Sorry! Good luck though!

Hi everyone!! :) Getting back to beauty blogging... I've heard great reviews about BOTH MAC SFF & Revlon Colorstay Foundation, but I have never tried using them yet :3

But MAC's foundations are sooooooooo expensive, so I only grabbed only the exfoliator. Their foundations were $48.00 each, so both products would be $AUD96.00 ... Therefore, I am gonna order from USA... Since the foundations are only $USD28.00.. But I need to find a US resident who will be able to help me out :3

ANYWAYS. So.. since I have an idea of what shade I am... I was struggling to find the equivalence in Revlon's Colorstay foundation. Took me a while to research this. And I hope this helps for you too! ... If you're facing the same problem.

This chart was copied DIRECTLY from HERE >

Revlon Colorstay vs MAC Studio Fix Fluid - Color Chart

Early Tan: NW35 (with somewhat peach undertones)
Rich Tan: NW35 (with pinkish undertones)
Golden Caramel: NC40/NC42 (more golden than Natural Tan)
Toast: NW43/NC45 (with neutral undertones)

I am gonna check out the range soon, and most definitely WILL try out the testers! This chart may not be precise, so please be careful! :)

I am by-no-means an expert. I don't understand much of these shading things! But if you have any question! Please leave in the comment and we can try to discuss with other beauty bloggers too! :)

EDIT: Please not that this color chart does NOT apply to Revlon's PhotoReady Foundation
