GLOSS Professional Brushes Review

I'm aware that there are not many reviews online of the GLOSS Professional brushes, so I thought I'd be one of the fewer firsts to review them!

In case you don't know, GLOSS is an Australian store which stocks both accessories and cosmetics. I'll link their website here.

After a while, the company decided to come out with their own make-up brushes line, known purely as 'GLOSS Professional Brushes' which are also priced similarly to BYS (a brand which they also stock) brushes.

Out of their collecton of 24 brushes, I own four of their brushes:
  • Eye pencil blending brush
  • Eyebrow/eyelash brush
  • Synthetic foundation brush
  • Powder brush
I also owned the Fibre-optic angular blush brush, but I couldn't find it for this review! I'm pretty sure I've lost somewhere while I moved houses :(

Powder brush ($19.95) - made of goat hair
I've used this brush for over a year now and I remember when I received this brush, the bristles are amazingly soft! However, after a year of usage, I do notice that the bristles became a tad worn out, but definitely still usable.
I can't tell you exactly if the colours of the bristles around the edge has faded to a white/greyish colour or not, because I don't remember if it was like that when I received it.

The black ferrule is actually very stable and I never had a problem with it falling off or whatsoever.

As for the bleeding and shredding of the brush, I've never had problems with it when I gave it its first wash. I do recommend this brush if you can't afford any higher-end brushes yet!

You can see that it's a very dense brush :)

Synthetic Foundation brush ($12.95) - made of nylon hair
This foundation brush is one of my absolute favourite! The handle is shorter than the size of an average foundation brush (similar to a travel-sized brush), but I really don't mind that.
The bristles are soft, quite flexible and shaped in a way which makes it very easy for me to get around to the smaller areas such as around my nose and inner corner of my eyes (because I do have shadows around the inner corner of my eyes :S).

The bristles are still as soft and flexible after one year of usage, so that's a thumbs up for me. I also DO recommend this brush if you are in look for an affordable and great quality.

Fibre-optic Angular Blush brush ($16.95) - made from BJF & nylon hair
Please note that I don't have this brush anymore, so I cannot show you pictures of it and can only detail my experience.

This brush had to be my least favourite brush out of all. I was pretty excited for their fibre-optic brushes, but unfortunately, I don't like this brush at all. The way it's packaged caused the brush to become very flat which is ehhh..?

Adding to the flatness, the brush is not dense at all, therefore I found that it distributed my blush quite unevenly and becomes quite hard to use. I don't like this brush, therefore I don't recommend it. Just stick to your regular blusher brushes.

Eye Pencil Blending brush ($6.95) - made of nylon hair
This brush stands out much in my collection of GLOSS brushes as it's just of pure white bristles (can be stained very easily) and square-headed.

The only times I would use this brush is to fill in my brows, because it's just the perfect width for the thickness of my brows (yikes! I hope that made sense!). I would also use this brush to smudge out my eyeliner for a smokey look and pack on eyeshadow(s) if I ever needed.

I personally feel that this is not a 'must-have' in my collection, but I do believe it could become useful at times. For this brush, it's really up to you.

Eyebrow/Mascara brush ($6.95) - made from pig hair
Ahh.. what can I say?

To me, all eyebrow and mascara brushes are the same! I can say that the only times I would use these brushes are to brush/blend my eyebrows. I personally don't use the eyelash side, because I strongly believe that separated eyelashes depends on your choice of mascara wands and not to mention, I think the eyelash comb actually clumps my eyelashes even more!

That's the end of my review for GLOSS Professional Brushes, but not yet the end of this post.

I'll also ramble a bit about the BYS vs GLOSS brushes, just in case you wanted to know which brand is better since GLOSS stores also stocks BYS cosmetics.

BYS vs GLOSS

In the past, I HAVE tried BYS brushes which includes their Synthetic Foundation brush and Blusher brush. Please keep in mind that this is a ramble of my past experience with BYS brushes, therefore I do not have any pictures comparison.

For the Synthetic Foundation brushes, the GLOSS brush wins by far. The bristles of the BYS synthetic foundation brush [which I've previously owned] was a tad pokey and would always clump together when I smack it into liquid foundation. It was not a very dense brush either and the ferrule would fall off after a few months, so I really don't recommend it.

Next up is the Blusher brush that I've purchased from them. I don't own a GLOSS Blusher brush, but I can tell you that like their foundation brush, I found the bristles of the brush very pokey. I can't remember much about the shape, but you shouldn't care for it as you can't do much with an extremely amazing shaped brush with the pokiest bristles. Hah!

I DO prefer GLOSS' brushes over BYS brushes and I know you will too. The BYS brushes are quite overpriced for their quality in my opinion.

I hope you found this review helpful and if you have any questions, please tweet me (@the_beautifool) or leave me a comment below!

Disclaimer: I won these brushes from a giveaway hosted by GLOSS Parramatta in 2010. This is NOT a sponsored post and the review is based on my honest opinions, comments and experiences. As for the BYS brushes, those I have purchased with my own money.

Saturday/Sunday Steals #11

Can't believe my market haul posts have came this far! This is actually my 11th post!
It actually started out as a weekly post, but unfortunately it's slowly declining to a fortnightly post.. because the weather in Sydney hasn't been so great. It's been rainy on the weekend nights, so mornings are always so dreary and no one wants to rent stalls to sell!

So these items are what I picked up over the last two weeks...

This stack of glitter! I thought I'd need it some day... the girl sold this to me for $1! They come in all sorts of colours, so it's definitely great if I'd ever need a particular colour glitter for whether make-up or nails.

Also this tiny BYS 'Glitter Dust' that the lady gave to me for free because it's so tiny :)

This weaved mail organizer (photo 1)... I initially wanted to use it for containing my eyeshadow palettes, but Mumma decided to use it for what it's supposed to be used for... mails, because a while later, we found this make-up organizer (photo 2)

I won't be using it though.. because my make-up shelf is already so full! So I thought I'd pass this to my sister as she has very fewer lipsticks, blushers and brushes, but she ends up using it as a stationery holder instead +_+"

Next up is this oh-so-colourful nail buffer/filer!

I don't remember how much it was, I think it was $1.. shouldn't be much. Yay for upgrading my manicure tools heh!

Lastly, these nail polishes... I also don't remember how much they were, because my mum also bought a few shirts, so the lady gave her an overall discount +_+"
But as you see, there are two bottles of Lacura nail polishes. Lacura nail polishes can be bought from Aldi... *interesting* I wonder if it'll be a hit or miss?

I'll report sometime soon!

There's also a bottle of Eclipse nail polish which I'm also excited to try ^-^

That is all! Hope you enjoyed this post!

Sinful Colors Nail Polish Review & Swatches

Before arriving to this blog post, you have probably heard of Sinful Color nail polishes... especially if you are an American resident.

Unfortunately, we don't have Sinful Colors over here [in Australia], but luckily.. we DO at least have a very affordable and similar nail polish brand, Ulta3. So check that out if you haven't!

Imaged sourced from Google Images

This brand is NOT available in Australia, reportedly. However, I HAVE seen a few colors sold at this bargain store, located at Parramatta Westfields on the bottom floor opposite to KFC. Besides that, you can purchase it from cherryculture for $2.50 [for 15ml/0.5 fl oz].

There are a range of colours you can choose from, crossing a range of finishes also. These polishes are pigmented and great quality for the price! Even though it applies a tad unevenly, it's very forgivable. I didn't notice anything special about their chip-resistant formula, but as long as it lasts for 2+ days, then I'm cool with that.

#314 Beautiful Girl is a lovely strawberry milk pink with a jelly finish. It applies quite sheer and a teeny tad uneven.

#855 Scandal is much like a ruby-pink of a jelly finish also. It's glossier and applies more sheer than 'Beautiful Girl', but it's forgivable.

#928 Let's Meet is my favourite shimmery honeycomb yellow -- gorgeous! The application went through very smoothly which is another reason why I love it!

#832 'This Is It' applies extremely sheer which sometimes makes me think it's just a glitter coat, but it's not. It has a lovely gold colour with gold shimmers, however, like I said, applies extremely sheer (you probably need at least 4 coats to pass) -- not my favourite.

#947 Mint Apple is a mint colour, no doubt. It's a turquoise green colour which in my opinion, suits fairer skin tones better. I somehow find my warm-toned skin clashing with this colour, so as much as I love it, this is not my favourite.

#933 Secret Admirer is a very shimmery black. I love shimmer polishes, but I don't like dark nail colours. Similar to 'Mint Apple', I have to say although it's beautiful... I don't prefer it.

Hope you found it helpful & thanks for dropping by!

Tag: IMATS Tag 2011

I saw many Youtubers respond to this tag, so I'd thought I'd contribute via my blog! Please tell me if you have already/will be doing this tag too! Link me! :)

1. Which IMATS are you attending?
I will be attending IMATS in Sydney which is in the upcoming September! *excited*

2. Have you ever been to IMATS before?
Nope. Pretty sure this is the second time they are hosting it in Australia!

3. How are you getting there?
I'll be busing it to the nearest train station and then train it to the City!

4. Are you bringing anyone along?
No. My sister isn't interested and I don't want her to be hanging around alone as I'd be participating in the ABBW.

5. Is there anything else in the IMATS host city that you want to see?
I live not far from the city (Sydney), so I won't be super excited to be in the city... but if I'd be there early in the morning, I'd love to see Darling Harbour's view early in the morning! At 7AM, the view is amazingly beautiful!

6. What days will you be in the city that IMATS is in?
I will be in the city for IMATS on the 24th of September, on the Saturday only.

7. Who do you want to meet?
I really want to meet some of blogger friends. Like.. Tezza? Ailing? and more Aussie bloggers from the ABBW! I'm too much of a shy girl though... :$

8. What companies exhibits are you most excited to see?
I'm most excited to see Make-Up Forever! I've heard so much about their products, especially their HD foundations and HD blushes! Waaah!! I'm also excited to see Ben Nye as I love love theatrical make-up and Showface too!

9. What products are you looking for?
I already wrote up a shopping list (LOL!) and it consists of:
  • MUFE HD Foundation and Blushes
  • Ben Nye Nose & Scar Wax and Liquid Latex
  • BEN NYE Eyeshadow and Blusher palettes
  • MUA Magazines
...and many more items of course! Hahahha!

10. How much do you plan to spend?
Umm.... $250? Hopefully :(

11. What do you want to get out of IMATS?
I would love to see the student competitions and see what it'll be like! I cannot wait! I'd also love to see some professional make-up artists to see how they perform and if there's any tips and tricks they'd love to share :P

That's all! I hope you enjoyed this post and link me if you decide to do this tag too!

Recent Haul

I promised myself that I wouldn't be hauling anymore till after IMATS (unless it's a market haul)... but some things are just necessary and some things are just irresistible!

If you live in Sydney... you'd know that Sydney's weather has been such a booger! Last week, there was one day when it was quite hot which made me thought spring/summer is coming! Yay! So I decided to pick up two anti-perspirant deo's at Woolies, but then the weather decided to do a 180 spin and it's all cold and wet outside! Walla!

I also dropped down to a local Asian beauty store in Cabramatta and picked up quite a few things! That store stocks MISSHA (a Korean brand) products, MODEL 2.1. lashes, Skinfood, BYS, Scandal [polishes] and a fewer selected Japanese mascaras and eyeliners.

I did pick up these two boxes of MODEL 2.1. lashes in No.5 and No.20. They costed $20 for 2 boxes and both styles are pretty natural.

No.5 - Natural and flared out on the outer end

No.20 - Natural, criss-crossed

No.5 vs No.20

I also picked up another pair of super duper dramatic lashes! They are quite 'catwalk', but I love it! This is the pair that I've used in my previous shoot! I picked it up for $6.90 and will be back to pick up more!

And of course, with all these lashes... comes Lashgrip [for $10]! I actually had problems finding Lashgrip because I didn't know what the box packaging looks like! +_+

During transaction, I asked the lady if she had any samples for the MISSHA BB Creams and she only had a sample for the Missha Signature Real Complete BB Cream left... Definitely will ask if she has a sample for the Perfect Cover BB Cream next time :) I wanted to try it again sometime!

Next stop is Priceline, my number one favourite pharmacy!

I picked up two lip conditioners, one from Blistex [my HG] and also another from Nivea [which was on sale for $2]. Blistex' lip conditioner is a tad pricey, but it works really well! They heal dried and chapped lips whereas the ones in the stick packaging are more of the 'prevention' side...

This is the end of my haul post! I hope it doesn't rain tonight so I could go to the markets tomorrow!! Yay!!

Goodnight!

Love for False Lashes Make-Up

I've always loved extremely dramatic lashes guy! I'm not talking about the everyday dramatic lashes! I love those lashes too but what I'm talking about are the super bright, bold, catwalk inspired lashes!

Like this...

I did buy them recently and will have a haul post coming up! But what I'm really excited to share with you are my camwhore photos of my make-up with these lashes! Tell me what you think!

I honestly didn't know how to spice up my eye make-up as the lashes were so big! But I gave it a shot!

These lashes look like sunnies when I look down! If you are wondering if they are heavy.. they are not at all! They are very comfortable, light-weight and easy to apply although the band is quite thick.

Camwhore time!

Yes...

Poser - checked.
Camwhore - checked.

What I have on:
  • Foundation: Masquerade + ShowFace Foundation (self mixed shade)
  • Concealer: MAC Studio Finish Concealer
  • Powder: Australis Ready Set Go Finishing Powder
  • Blush: A pink/coral eyeshadow by Showface (applied a very light layer)
  • Highlighter: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Double Face Perfector (highlighter for nose bridge + cheek bones)
  • Eyeshadows: ShowFace palette
  • Eyeliner: Le'Lan Vital ExtremeWear Gel Eyeliner
  • Lashes: Purchased from an Asian store in Cabramatta
  • Mascara: Prestige My Blackest Lashes Mascara (bottom lashes)
  • Lip Colour: L'Oreal Color Riche Lipstick in Burning Rose and dabs of Rimmel Colour Show Off Lipstick in Tell No One

I know that something needs to be done about the lighting, but I hope that I'd be able to figure of an inexpensive solution!

Till then.. everyone take care and have a wonderful day!
